What counts as an io game

Nobody owns the term, so here is the bar this index uses. A game gets in if it does all four:

  • It starts in seconds. Open the link, pick a name, play. No account, no install, no launcher.
  • Other people are in it. Live multiplayer in a shared arena, not a leaderboard on a single-player game.
  • One idea, done well. Eat, grow, shoot, claim. You understand it before the first death.
  • It still runs. Every link here was checked by hand. Dead games come out, relaunches go back in.

The .io ending helps but is not required. TETR.IO and Curve Fever Pro are here because they play like io games. Paper.io and Hole.io are not, because their web versions are gone and only the apps remain.

A short history

  1. Agar.io goes up. Matheus Valadares, 19, posts a link on 4chan. Within weeks it is one of the most searched games of the year. The .io domain was cheap and short, and it stuck to the genre.
  2. Slither.io. Steve Howse takes the same loop, swaps cells for snakes, and hits the top of the app charts. Every studio notices.
  3. Diep.io, Valadares again. Tanks, shapes and an upgrade tree. The template for a hundred top-down shooters.
  4. The flood. Splix, Mope, Deeeep, Starve, MooMoo, Zombs, Surviv, Skribbl, Krunker. Most of the classics on this page are from these three years.
  5. Lockdown. Browser games with no install and no login are suddenly the easiest way to play with friends. Skribbl, Betrayal and Territorial fill up.
  6. Surviv.io shuts down. Open-source rebuilds like Suroi and OpenFront show that a community can keep a format alive without its original owner.
  7. Kongregate brings Surviv.io back. Ten years in, most of the originals still run, and that is what this index tracks.
